Our
School
Established
in 1972, Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (AASD) is
devoted to providing quality, comprehensive, full-day instructional
services to infants, children, and youth who are deaf, including
persons with multiple handicaps. Our classroom programs range from
preschool through twelfth grade. Students experience a range of
academic, vocational, and social opportunities.
Our
Faculty
The
dedication and qualifications of AASD's highly skilled faculty are
exceptional. Over 80% of faculty members hold a Masters or higher
degree. All members are specially trained for and particularly
committed to the unique needs of students who are deaf. Deaf faculty
members fully understand the life challenges and learning hurdles
facing a deaf student and assist other staff members with the
intricacies of teaching the deaf. Our classrooms average only three to
five students for each teacher. This extraordinarily low student to
teacher ratio lets our students receive the individual instruction and
attention that each needs to reach their potential.
Our
Students
The
richness of the AASD school experience is rooted in the richness of our
student body. This diverse group consists of individuals who are both
moderately and profoundly deaf, as well as multi-handicapped students.
Students range in age from 3 through 21, each attending classes in
appropriate age-specific departments. With classes spanning preschool
through senior high school, AASD can continue to serve each child's
changing needs as they grow. This unique continuity within a single
campus lets students form enduring friendships, and also allows our
faculty to personally know each student and act as long-term adult role
models.
